Living in Rockford, MN: An Honest Look Before You Move

I have lived in Rockford for 18 years. I am not going to give you a marketing brochure version of this town. I am going to tell you what I actually know from living here, raising a family here, and driving these roads every single day.

The Distance Reality

Rockford sits about 45 minutes from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport and about the same to downtown Minneapolis. You are roughly 30 minutes from Maple Grove, which is where a lot of people end up doing their shopping, dining, and errands.

This is a commuter community. Most people who live in Rockford do not work in Rockford. The pattern I see most often is one person working downtown or somewhere in the metro and the other working from home. Employment options within the town itself are limited.

What you are trading for that commute is space, affordability, and quiet. For a lot of people that trade makes complete sense. For others it does not. Knowing which camp you fall into before you buy is important.

Why We Chose Rockford

When my husband Scott and I bought our home here in 2008, I was teaching in Buffalo and Scott was willing to make a long drive to Mendota Heights. We were looking at a Lennar development with mature trees, larger lots, and brand new construction. The exact same model was being built in Plymouth at the same time.

We could not have afforded the Plymouth version on a teacher's salary. We bought in Rockford and got a beautiful home, a generous yard with mature trees, and a neighborhood we loved. I have looked up what that Plymouth model costs today and it is well out of reach. The Rockford version gave us something we genuinely could not have gotten closer to the city at that price point.

Plymouth would have been more convenient. That is simply true. But what we got in Rockford was more house, more land, and a setting that I still find genuinely beautiful.

River Road

If you have never driven River Road in Rockford, it is worth the trip just to see it. It runs along the Crow River and it is gorgeous in every season. After all of these years, I still notice it on my daily drive. If I ever leave Rockford, that road is one of the things I will genuinely miss.

The natural setting here is one of the town's most underappreciated qualities. It does not show up in a lot of real estate listings but it shapes what daily life actually feels like.

What Rockford Does Not Have

There is no local grocery store in Rockford. The nearest options are in Delano, Buffalo, St. Michael, or Plymouth, all roughly the same distance away at about twelve miles. Most people adjust to this quickly because they are already driving through neighboring towns for work and fold grocery shopping into those trips. Delivery options have also expanded significantly, and that helps.

There is no Target. There is a Dollar General, a QuikTrip, a handful of gas stations, a few bars, and a couple of churches. Local dining is extremely limited and fast food options are not much better. If walkability or easy access to restaurants and retail matters to you in your daily life, Rockford is going to frustrate you. That has been my biggest ongoing annoyance with living here, and I would be dishonest if I did not say so.

What Rockford does have is quiet. Small town quiet. The kind where you do not know everyone but you recognize familiar faces. The housing stock is varied, from mobile home parks and smaller downtown properties to newer developments and million-dollar homes along the river and throughout Greenfield. There is more range here than people expect.

A Note on Special Needs Resources

This is personal to my family, and I share it because it might matter to yours.

We have a son with special needs, and we have found Wright County to be genuinely accommodating and a good fit for our family in many ways. That was a surprise we did not anticipate when we moved here, and it has kept us rooted in this community.

The tradeoff is distance from specialized medical facilities. Children's Hospital and Gillette are not close. Over the years we have logged a significant number of miles and hours in the car getting to appointments and therapy. It is a real consideration and one worth thinking through honestly if you or someone in your household needs regular access to specialized medical care or support services.

Every family's situation is different. I am sharing what ours has looked like.

What People Get Wrong About Rockford

There is a reputation that gets attached to small towns like this one, and it has never matched my experience of living here. The people I have encountered have been hardworking people who chose a quieter life a little further from the city. That is the most accurate description I can give you.

I continue to live here because I love my home, I have built a garden I adore, and Wright County has been good to my family. The commutes and the lack of restaurants are real. So is the beauty of the river, the affordability, and the space.

If you want a quiet life with more house and land for your money and you are genuinely okay with driving for most things, Rockford is worth a serious look. If you need convenience, walkability, or proximity to the city woven into your daily life, it is probably not the right fit.
